Configuring DHCP Failover in Windows 2012

We are going to explain how we can configure a DHCP server in Failover.
Go to Server Manager -> Add Roles and Features

Select Roles, select DHCP Server

Install the Rol

When the installation finish, go to the flag with the warning on the top and select Complete DHCP configuration

Specify the credential to be used to authorize the DHCP server in AD DS. By default I write domain administrator, but you can configure a specific user for this task with enought permision.

Commit and appear a new windows with the installation status.

We have a DHCP server running, now we need to configure a new Scope for give ips to computers. Go to DHCP Manager and right click in IPv4 -> New Scope

Create a new scope with a Start IP, End IP and Subnet.

On the window "Configure DHCP Options" if you select Yes, you can configure a Default Router IP, Default DNS, and Default Wins Server. If you select NO, the wizard end.

Now, on DHCP Manager you can view the New Scope

Now, we need to configure the DHCP server Rol in the second DHCP Server. We install the DHCP Rol and run DHCP Post-Install configuration Wizard.

On DHCP Manager -> Server1 -> IPv4 -> Right Click -> Configuration Failover

Select the Scope that we want to aply on the Failover. In this case only have one scope.

Select the Second DHCP server

We can choose two modes. Load Balance and Hot Standby. 
Load Balance: the two servers simultaneously serve IP addresses and options to clients on a given subnet. The client requests are load balanced and shared between the two servers.
Hot Standby:  two servers operate in a failover relationship where an active server is responsible for leasing IP addresses and configuration information to all clients in a scope or subnet. The secondary server assumes this responsibility if the primary server becomes unavailable. A server is primary or secondary in the context of a subnet.

When the installation finish, on DHCP Manager we can see the same scope in server DHCP1 and server DHCP2

In the future, if we want to broke the Failover we can do it in DHCP Manager.

When deconfigure the DHCP Failover, in DHCP Manager the Scope in the second DHCP server dissapears.
